AI Job Types — Market Demand

💡

Spanish speakers have a unique advantage: cultural bias detection and multilingual AI evaluation are in high demand. Your bilingual skills are a premium feature, not just a nice-to-have.

03 — HOT AREAS

Top 5 Hottest AI Training Areas

Pick one to specialize in. Each area has a clear skill path — no CS degree required, just curiosity and practice.

01

RLHF / LLM Evaluation

Most In-Demand $30–$60/hr

Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback is how companies like OpenAI and Anthropic train ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini. You read AI responses and rate them on quality, accuracy, and safety.

How to build this skill:
1. Take the RLHF Coursera project 2. Practice on 100 real AI outputs 3. Apply to DataAnnotation / Outlier
Architecture advantage: Design critiques train you to evaluate aesthetics and logic simultaneously — exactly what RLHF needs.
02

Prompt Engineering

Most Accessible $25–$50/hr

Crafting instructions that get AI to produce better results. This is the most entry-level-friendly area — no coding needed. Bilingual prompt engineers are especially valuable for multilingual AI products.

How to build this skill:
1. Prompt Engineering for ChatGPT (Coursera) 2. Build a bilingual prompt library 3. Document outcomes in a portfolio
Architecture advantage: Visual spatial thinking makes you naturally good at structured, precise instructions — the core of prompt engineering.
03

Multimodal Annotation (Image + Text + Video)

Visual Skills + $20–$45/hr

Labeling images, describing visual scenes, evaluating AI-generated images for quality and accuracy. Computer vision makes up 45% of total AI data demand. Your eye for design is directly applicable.

How to build this skill:
1. AI For Everyone (visual AI module) 2. Practice on Remotasks image tasks 3. Specialize in architecture/spatial AI
Architecture advantage: 45% of all AI data is visual. Your training in spatial reasoning, proportion, and visual hierarchy is a direct asset.
04

AI Ethics & Responsible AI

Growing Fast $25–$55/hr

Identifying bias, toxicity, and cultural blind spots in AI outputs. Bilingual evaluators are uniquely positioned because cultural context differs between English and Spanish — you can spot what monolingual reviewers miss.

How to build this skill:
1. AI For Everyone (ethics module) 2. Read Google's People + AI Research (PAIR) 3. Apply cultural lens to AI outputs
Bilingual advantage: Companies pay a premium for evaluators who can assess AI behavior in both English and Latin American Spanish context.
05

Voice & Audio AI Training

Bilingual Premium $25–$40/hr

Recording voice samples, transcribing audio, evaluating speech AI for accuracy and naturalness. Spanish-language voice AI is one of the fastest-growing segments. Native speakers command premium rates.

How to build this skill:
1. Join Alignerr (accepts LatAm) 2. Complete voice onboarding tasks 3. List both EN + ES voice services
Bilingual advantage: Spanish is the #2 language in AI training demand. Being a native Spanish speaker makes you 3× more valuable for voice AI projects.
04 — PREPARATION

06 — BUSINESS SETUP (COSTA RICA)
🇨🇷

Setting Up Your Business in Costa Rica

As a Costa Rican citizen doing remote AI work, formalizing your business protects you legally, lets you issue electronic invoices, and unlocks better tax rates. Here is everything you need to know.

When You Scale Up

Option B: Sociedad de Responsabilidad Limitada (S.R.L.)

A formal LLC registered with the Registro Nacional. Better when earning $3,000+/month, working with multiple clients, or planning to hire. Requires a public notary and two shareholders minimum.

  • Separates personal and business assets
  • Professional appearance for larger clients
  • Can bring in partners or investors
  • More complex compliance (annual filings)
Startup cost: ~$500–$1,500 USD

Step-by-Step: Trabajador Independiente Registration

Follow these 5 steps in order. All can be done online except the CCSS affiliation, which has an in-person option.

01

Register with Hacienda (Ministerio de Hacienda)

Time: 1–2 hours · Online

Register as a taxpayer (contribuyente) through the Administración Tributaria Virtual (ATV) portal. You will complete the Registro Único Tributario (RUT) form with your personal ID (cédula), contact info, and the economic activity code for your services.

What you need: Cédula de identidad Email address Economic activity code Fiscal address (your home is fine)
→ atv.hacienda.go.cr
02

Obtain Electronic Invoice Capability (Factura Electrónica)

Time: 1–3 days · Online

Costa Rica requires all registered taxpayers to issue electronic invoices (facturas electrónicas) for services rendered. Register for the electronic billing system through ATV. You will need a digital signature (Firma Digital) card — apply at BCR, BN, or BAC Credomatic. Several free/low-cost platforms exist for generating invoices (e.g., Qupos.cr, Tica Cloud, ARCA).

What you need: Firma Digital card (~₡5,000–₡15,000) ATV registration complete Invoice platform account
→ sfe.go.cr (Electronic Billing System)
03

Register with CCSS as Trabajador Independiente

Time: 1–2 days · Online or In-Person

The Caja Costarricense de Seguro Social (CCSS) provides healthcare and pension coverage. As an independent worker, you must enroll to contribute. Contributions are based on your declared monthly income and range from 10% to 18%. This covers your SEM (health) and IVM (pension). In-person: CCSS office, San José, Av. 2, Edificio El Hierro. Online: Oficina Virtual de la Caja.

What you need: Cédula de identidad Proof of Hacienda registration Declared monthly income estimate
→ ccss.sa.cr/ovirtual
04

Open a Business Bank Account or Use a Payment Platform

Time: 1–5 days

Foreign AI platforms typically pay via PayPal, Payoneer, Wise, or direct bank transfer. Open a Payoneer or Wise account to receive USD from foreign clients, then transfer to your local Colón account. Most Costa Rican banks (BCR, BN, BAC) accept individual accounts for independent workers. Some platforms may require a USD account — BCR and BAC offer dollar accounts.

Recommended: Payoneer (free) — most AI platforms pay here Wise — low-fee USD→CRC conversion BCR or BAC for local CRC account
05

Apply for Municipal Business License (Patente Comercial) — Optional for Home-Based Work

Time: 1–4 weeks · Only if operating a physical location

If you work remotely from home providing services to foreign clients (AI platforms), a municipal business license is generally NOT required. If you ever open a physical office or studio, apply at your local municipality. The cost varies by municipality and estimated annual revenue.

For remote AI work from home: Steps 1–4 are sufficient to be fully legal and compliant.

Taxes & Fees You Will Pay

0–25%
Annual filing via Form 101-1 in ATV. 2026 reform: 25% flat deduction on gross income without receipts (OR deduct actual expenses — whichever is lower). Exempt threshold: ₡6,244,000/year (~$12,400 USD). Brackets: 10% on next ₡8.3M, 15% on next ₡2.1M, then higher.
Due: March 15 annually
VAT — IVA (Impuesto al Valor Agregado)
13%
13% VAT on services rendered to Costa Rican clients. Important: services exported to foreign clients (AI platforms abroad) are typically zero-rated (0% IVA). You still must file monthly Form D-104 even if zero. File by the 15th of the following month.
Due: 15th of every month
CCSS Contributions (Health & Pension)
10–18%
Self-employed workers pay a progressive rate based on declared monthly income: ~10.67% for lower incomes, up to ~18% at higher income levels. Covers SEM (health/maternity) and IVM (pension). Paid monthly. You get full Caja healthcare access in return.
Due: Monthly
Legal Entity Tax (if you form an S.R.L.)
~$180–$540 USD/yr
All registered companies pay an annual flat tax based on gross income. Inactive companies ~$180 USD/yr. Active companies up to ~$540 USD/yr. Failure to pay 3 years = automatic dissolution. NOT applicable to Trabajador Independiente.
Due: January 31 annually

💡
The 2026 Tax Advantage for Remote AI Workers

Under Costa Rica's 2026 income tax reform (Law 10667), independent workers can deduct 25% of gross income without needing receipts or invoices. For an AI trainer earning $1,500/month ($18,000/year), only $13,500 is taxable — and the first ~$12,400 is exempt. This means many students earning part-time AI income could owe zero income tax.
